We have teamed up with other Protactile experts in various state-based trainings. DeafBlind persons often do not have immediate direct language experience. Often, we receive interpreting or co-navigation training requests because of the ample funding opportunities out there for interpreters to earn CEUs. This is a sighted privilege.
We consider training requests, and even send in proposals. In doing so, one non-negiotable requirement for our training curriculum is to involve local DeafBlind community members so that they can also learn protactile hands-on with us, as it is our language to share. Local DeafBlind communities include DeafBlind persons, co-navigators, interpreters, families, and allies. By inviting local DeafBlind persons to work with trainees in applying their learning experiences, we slowly build and create a Protactile community.
